I talked about this earlier but let me dig deep into it a little more.
I remember a story, a very funny one at that, from when we were growing up, my dad gave a rule "tell me the truth and I won't flog you".
Anyways, flogging a child is normal here in Africa especially Nigeria. Everyone including those who have never stepped their foot into a church, quote this scripture to justify flogging "spare the rod spoil the child", it was so shocking to know that every Nigerian knew the bible when it came to flogging.
Though flogging has been known to do the trick with most Nigerian children, it resets us back to default settings. Even adults, have you seen when a soilder flogs someone before?
The stroke of the koboko brings back words you haven't heard in a long time it's like it touches a nerve which triggers an old memory of some sort, which then places you in a subtle mood, you remember when you father used to tell you that "your hand go put you for wahala", with that in mind whatever the solider asks you to do, you do so with fear and trembling.
Enough of describing how flogging feels I can tell most of us can relate to what I'm saying, now back to my story.
After my dad gave his speech about not flogging we all bought the story, and so one day while playing, by mistake our TV fell off the shelf.
Oh! our precious black and white president TV, this TV was bae back then.
We picked it up and kept it back on the shelf, then my brother took it upon himself to say it was his fault the TV fell,
oh my brother so gullible
When my dad returned from work and discovered his precious TV fell, and had a crack on the side, he rounded up the squad (My siblings and I) and my bro came forth to say he did it.
Few minutes later he regretted his decision to come clean, as he was flogged. He was flogged not because he told the truth or because the TV fell, but because he is the first born who is supposed to be without reproach.
